The Grapes of Wrath- Symbolism Essay Free Essays

Symbolism Symbols are often used to represent bigger ideas and concepts in a novel. In The Grapes of Wrath, there are many symbols to represent the lives of not only the Jode family but the migrants as a whole. Steinbeck uses the symbols of the dust and the turtle to show the struggles of the migrants and how they overcame all odds, revealing the only hope the migrants had to survive the harsh trek cross country was perseverance. We will write a custom essay sample on The Grapes of Wrath- Symbolism Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now The dust is the first significant symbol Steinbeck uses to represent the migrants and their struggles. As the dust filled the air in Oklahoma, families watched their lives settle to nothing along with the dust, â€Å"The men were silent and they did not move often. And the women came out of the houses to stand beside their men– to feel whether this time the men would break† (3). The dust is symbolic of the migrant’s lives eroding to nothing. It represents not only mother natures roll in the horrible tragedy of the crumbling families, but also represents the banks and large plantations that took over the small and venerable families and farms just like the dust engulfed their homes. Though the migrants went through so much with losing their farms, homes, and lives, they still stood strong and found a way to keep moving forward, â€Å"After a while the faces of the watching men lost their bemused perplexity and became hard and angry and resistant† (3). The migrant families overcame their struggles with the dust over taking their homes along with all of the other struggles they faced, and they moved west for a new life. On their journey west, the migrants faced many challenging obstacles that they had to persevere through. Steinbeck uses the symbolism of the turtle to represent the stubborn migrants fighting their way west, â€Å"And over the grass at the roadside a land turtle crawled, turning aside for nothing, dragging his high-domed shell over the grass† (14). The turtle was set back by both nature and man on his journey across the road, just like the migrants were on their long trek westward. The turtle faced a red ant, barely escaped death by a car twice, and had to struggle with rough terrain along with flipping himself upright after being flipped over by the front wheel of a ruck. Like the migrants overcoming sickness, death, car problems, money shortage, unfair merchants, and lack of work, the turtle also overcame all of his challenges and setbacks and continued to persevere on his path, â€Å"Its front foot caught a piece of quartz and little by little the shell pulled over and flopped upright†¦ The turtle entered a dust road and jerked itself along, drawing a wavy shallow trench in the dust with its shell. The old humorous eyes looked ahead†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (15). Even though the turtle had several setbacks, he still held his head high and looked forward down the path he was traveling, never forgetting where he was going just like the migrants. The dust and the turtle symbolize the journey of the migrants starting from the moment they were kicked out of their homes. The turtle is a better representation of how hard the migrants fought to reach their final destination, just to find they had to fight to live one day at a time. The dust is the best symbol Steinbeck uses to represent the bigger farms and natures roll in the future of the migrants. However both symbols represent the bigger picture, the perseverance the migrants had to use to survive each day on their journey, and each hour once they reached their overpopulated destination of California. Taxation Laws Domicile Test

Question: Discuss about the Report for Taxation Laws of Domicile Test. Answer: Case study 1 Residence and Source: Under the given case study, it is understood that Fred will be considered for taxable purpose as a resident in Australia. According to case study, it is should be noted that Fred has lived in Australia for a period of eleven months before going back to his native country in England. Hence, the income, which is earned from France during the tenure of his employment in England, will also be considered will also be considered while calculating the tax assessment during his stay in Australia. A significant factor is to be considered while assessing the residential status since it is a complex affair and it is largely dependent upon on the individual private state of affairs (Tanzi 2014). On the other hand, one cannot put pressure on the relevancy of the clarity relating to the subject matter of the residential status and the immigrants achieving appropriate advice in beforehand concerning the particulars of business undertakings or any contracts. According to the Australian taxation laws, an individual who spends a minimum of 183 days in Australia will be liable for tax. Hence, Fred will be considered for tax since he stayed in Australia for a period of eleven months. A migrant concerning their terms related to migration visa dwelling in Australia for a period of 183 shall be intermittently held liable for tax. The case study also highlights that Fred also bought a land for a period of 12 months on lease along with this he also stayed with his wife prior to returning England due to poor health. As mentioned under the agency of Australian tax, a person is spared on the condition when he satisfies the commissioner of tax that his original place of dwelling is in Australia. Therefore, the individuals must also satisfy the Australian tax commission agency that he or she does not have any intentions to take up Australian residency. The taxations rulings of Income Tax 2650 under the domicile test also determines that the country or nations where an individual is originally born unless an individual migrates himself to some other nation or country and select his domicile of his personal choice. As it is mentioned in the case study that Fred is known to be a resident of England who is looking into the prospect of setting up his business in Australia (Saez et al. 2012). Though the case study does not reflects the terms of stay in Australia regarding his number of days but the study also reveals that he took house for a time frame of twelve months before deciding to return England on account of poor health. Under the given study, the residential status of Fred is determined on the basis of his stay in Australia and the residential test conducted provides the truth that the liability for tax is dependent on his tenure of stay. The study also takes into the consideration that if the individual returns to his native county those trips will be determined in terms of regularity period. Therefore, form the given case study Fred is liable to be taxed under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 given his business ties and family in Australia. Case study 2 Ordinary Income I. Californian Copper Syndicate Ltd v Harris (Surveyor of Taxes) (1904) 5 TC 159 The above stated study considers the issues, which is related to the realization of capital assets and whether such proceeds derived from the sale of property can be exploited for minerals under the ordinary income or capital. Law: Tax rulings have offered the directions concerning the subjects which is subjected to profits yielded resulted from isolated transactions are considered as income and are assessed under the subsection 25(1) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 (Woellner et al. 2016). The term Isolated transaction can is understood as; Transactions or business dealings which is occurred outside the ordinary business circumstances related to a tax payer executing the activities of trade and commerce and; Certain business transactions recorded under the non-business taxpayers. Outcome: The outcomes which is generated from the above state case states that the tax payer was assessable on the circumstances which is related to the profits which occurred from the sale of land and those profits were treated as income. It is evident from the case study that the taxpayer was endeavoring to yield profits from sale proceeds of land. From the given case study it is evident that the intentions of the tax payer was clear as it never had the required amount of funds for the mining of land (Poterba 2014). As stated by the lord of Justice, that a well-defined principles was considered while dealing with the questions related to the assessment of Income tax. The study defines that the owner of the ordinary investment decided to realize it in order to achieve higher price when the tax payer originally obtains it in enhanced price and not the profit as stated under Schedule D of the Income Tax Act of 1842, which is measurable for income tax purpose. II. Scottish Australian Mining Co Ltd v FC of T (1950) 81 CLR 188 The case of Scottish Australian Mining takes into the consideration of the issues, which is related to the incomes generated from business, and the mining corporation has put such sub-division of land into the use. The assessment constitutes regarding the ordinary income or it was just the capital realization. Law: Capital gains tax: Any capital gains or loss if made on the occurrence of CGT event regarding any gains arising from capital assets. As stated under section 108-5 (1) of the income tax assessment act 1997 a capital gains is defined as any king of property or a lawful equitable right which is not considered as property (Tiley and Loutzenhiser 2012). Outcomes: The outcomes of these case states that the decision passed by the authority can be long cited for the proposition that a meager realization concerning an assets in an enterprising way was related to capital. According to the common law, the hearing of the case took almost two long days to hear and the outcome of this case was determined after six days of the hearing proceedings (Tiley and Loutzenhiser 2012). The decision precisely states that the there will not be any extended truthful enquiry into the actions of the taxpayer or any sort of widespread disputes regarding the accounting disputes surrounding the case. Therefore, the decision passed under this case substantially explains the commercial exercise was treated in the form of capital realization of assets. III. FC of T v Whit fords Beach Pty Ltd (1982) 150 CLR: The above mentioned case study takes into the considerations was the taxpayer was assessable on the framework of profits on sale of subdivided land as mentioned under section 25 (1) or section 26 (a) or the tax payer was just realizing the capital assets. Law: According the rulings which is described by the law concerning the case study provides the directions in determination of the proceeds which is generated from the Isolated transactions and are considered for income which is assessable under the subsection 25 (1) of the Income Tax Act Assessment Act 1936. However, the rulings passed by the court does not takes into the considerations regarding the application of section 25 A of the capital gains and capital losses under provision (Part IIIA) or Division of Part III. Outcomes: According to the judgements passes by the Gibbs CJ, Mason, Murphy and Wilson JJ, the tax payer will be considered for assessment on the framework of profits yielded from the sale of land which is defined under the section 25 (1). The high court passed its verdicts that the profit had crossed the realization mark concerning the capital assets and the activities, which is related to the execution of business activities in terms of the development of land. Hence, the profits which is generated from the sale of land is assessable under second limb of section 26 (a) for revenues and profits arising out of business undertakings and schemes. Whereas, Gibbs and Mason J specifies that the second limb comes into the operations when section 25 (1) does not considers the profits generated from gross income. The outcomes concerning the case defines that the profits should be considered for calculations by deducting the gross proceeds generated from the sales revenue of land when it was ventured i n the taxpayers land development business scheme. IV. Statham Anor v FC of T 89 ATC 4070 The case of study of Statham and Anor is based on the questions concerning the proceeds which is derived from the sale of subdivided land constituting of the assessable income under section 25 (1) or under 26 (a). Law: Assessable income: Sales derived from subdivided land originally acquired was put into use for the purpose of farming as well as the proceeds generated from the execution of business represented any pure realization of assets. Outcomes: The federal court in its rulings provided that, the net proceeds yielded from the sale of subdivided land does not consists of the assessable income under section 25 (1) or 26 (a). As stated by the Woodward, Lockhart and Hartigan JJ it is believed that a mere realization of assets on profit does not necessarily consist of taxable income. The court stated that incomes and profit must realize from carrying on a business activities. Hence, merely realizing the assets for profits does not constitute of converting into the business undertakings though the scale of realization activities is considered for determining the nature of business undertaking as stated under (ATC p 4075). V. Casimaty v FC of T 97 ATC 5135 The case of Casimity v FC takes into the consideration the amount of profit generated from the disposal of parts of property which can be assessed either under section 25 (1) or 25 A. Law: The current case study is determined under the sub headings of assessable incomes, which is explains the sub-divisions of land, which is originally obtained and used for farming (Faccio and Xu 2015). The law also raises questions whether the profits generated are proportionately related to the business activities or from just realization of capital assets. Outcomes: The federal court on the other hand ruled that the profits were not derived from any commercial subdivision of land or from any earning schemes from business undertakings. The court under its rulings provided that the revenue be generated from realization of capital assets of the tax payer. It is understood from the case that the taxpayer has performed the business activities of farming and fencing in collaboration with his wife and sons. The study provides that there was no attempt of any sort of action view from the taxpayer under the partnership account. In addition to this, the taxpayer did not inquire about to claim the business expenses in the form of interest, which is borrowed in order to settle the sub divisional costs (Faccio and Xu 2015). The federal court passed its verdict by saying that action view was acquired by the tax payer with the viewpoint that no profits is assessable in accordance with the first limb as mentioned under section 25 A (1). The federal court also i ndicated that neither the second limb nor the sub section have any applicability since sales did not occurred while executing any profit undertaking scheme. VI. Moana Sand Pty Ltd v FC of T 88 ATC 4897 The above stated study raises the questions whether section 25 (1) or 26 (a) is implemented to consider the tax payer assessable earnings in relation to the amount received by the tax payer after deducting the cost to generate the profits which is derived from the sale of land. Law: The rulings used under this case study provide the guidance while assessing the profits arising from the isolated income. The rulings questions whether the profits are assessable under section 25 (1) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 (Harding 2013). Moreover, it is important to denote that the rulings does not considers the applicability of the Section 25A of the tax payers capital gains or capital losses under the provision of the (Part IIIA) or division 6A of Part III. Outcomes: The court in its rulings provides that the amount received by the taxpayer was considered as Isolated transactions. The profit is considered as the earning in terms of ordinary income framework in compliance with the decision passed under the FC of T v The Emporium LTD 87 ATC 4363 and it is regarded as assessable income as stated under section 25 (1). The case study highlights that the taxpayer acquitted the land to work and subsequently sell off the sand on profit (Harding 2013). The profit, which was derived from the resumption of land by the coast protection board, was still considered as an assessable profit notwithstanding that the taxpayer had initially decided to sell of the land rather than selling off the land when it became mature for subdivision. The court passed its verdict that the surplus earnings was assessable under the second limb of section 26 (a) as it was raised on the profit making undertakings. VII. Crow v FC of T 88 ATC 4620: The above stated case study raises the question of applicability of subsection 25 (1) or section 26 (a) of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1936 which operates to includes under the assessable income of the taxpayer profit generated from the sale of land near Hobart. Law: Assessable income: Sales derived from the sale of land was originally acquired with the objective of farming and the sales revenue generated from the business operations demonstrates capital realization. Outcomes: The outcomes passed concerning the case was distinguished relating to the property, which is used in the form of mine for longer duration of time for farming business activities. The court passed the verdict that the taxpayer had high borrowings in order to purchase high blocks of land for conducting the activities of farming (Cronin et al. 2013). However, during the latter stages it was stated that the tax payer had sold off some portion of land and the taxpayer was assessable in terms of profit generated as he carried the business operations concerning the land development. VIII. McCurry Anor v FC of T 98 ATC 4487 The case raises the questions regarding the profits generated from the disposal of land, which can be assessable under section 25 (1). Law: Assessable income: The taxpayer is assessed under the section 25 (1) of the income tax assessment act 1936 on the earnings generated from the sale of land as because it was derived from the profit yielding scheme of business undertakings. Perhaps it must be noted that this section does not apply in regard to the sale of property acquired on or after 20 September 1985 (Cronin et al. 2013). Outcome: The case study highlights that the taxpayers were brothers and utilized their funds obtained from bank together to procure a land on which their old house stood. The taxpayer in the meanwhile detached their old residence, which provided them the opportunity to build three townhouse on the same land. The court on the passed the verdict that if any property has been obtained during the course of business or commercial dealings with the aim of obtaining profit from the development of land (Reforms et al. 2014). Hence, the court ruled under section 25 (1) that the taxpayer entered into the commercial dealings. Therefore, the taxpayer was not carrying on business activities and the profits gained must be assessable under the commercial dealings. Reference List: Auerbach, A.J., 2013. Race in Recitatif free essay sample

Recitatif is a story written by Toni Morrison. It is about characters Twyla and Roberta and their experiences during and after being put in a shelter. Race can change what a person’s motives are viewed as. Racial stereotyping and racial segregation play a big part in this story. We will write a custom essay sample on Race in Recitatif or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Twyla and Roberta are of a different race/ethnicity which causes strife between the two and they have different opinion on things. It never truly states either characters race, but it says that they look like â€Å"salt and pepper†, indicating that one is white and one is black. Race affects a lot of things in any situation, no matter how much we want it not to. Some statements give you an idea of which is which. Twyla’s ethnicity is indicated by Jimi Hendrix and Roberta’s by the statement, â€Å"you know how it was with black and white back then†. Twyla appears to be white and Roberta appears to be black in this story. Another thing that indicates it is that Roberta is completely against busing but Twyla is not. Plus they both thought that Maggie was of their own race. Twyla thought she was white and Roberta thought she was black. Also, each others attitudes towards each other or toward others also indicates which is white and which is black. Although neither character can remember exactly what happened with Maggie, the mute lady that worked at the shelter, each character had their own attitudes towards it. Roberta that it was more acceptable that Maggie was beaten than Twyla did because Roberta thought Maggie was black, while Twyla didn’t think she was because she thought Maggie was white. Each character has their own viewpoint on exactly what had happened that day due to their race which gave them a different attitude towards the situation. Also, Twyla thought she fell and the older girls laughed at her versus Roberta thinking she was tripped and beaten. The big thing in this story is racial stereotyping. You would never know which character is of which race without it. The writer uses racial stereotyping and a very clever way when writing this story. Instead of outright saying which is which, you figure it out based on racial stereotyping. In most cases we should not racially stereotype or even stereotype at all. But the author uses it in such a way that it is okay in this instance. Without this racial stereotyping, you would never know which is â€Å"salt† and which is â€Å"pepper†. Racial stereotyping gives you the information needed to know from which racial background each character comes from. After everything that happened in the shelter both characters eventually left the shelter. Twyla became a waitress and Twyla did some drugs and became a part of the bad crowd. When they saw each other again, Twyla was happy to see Roberta, but Roberta didn’t feel the same way due to her attitude towards her. They moved on. Both characters got married and had families. They then met in again in a supermarket and Roberta had a good attitude towards Twyla. Depending on whom she was with and what part of her life she was in, Roberta’s attitude towards Twyla would change. This is a racial stereotype. Roberta again had a bad racial attitude towards Twyla when she started picketing and protesting things about the school system and racial issues. While Twyla was okay with segregation in the school system and blacks going to one school while whites went to another, Roberta was not okay with it. She was actually strongly against it. She felt that blacks and whites should have equal opportunities and she was picketing about it. Because of an incident while Twyla was in a car and black women were rocking her car and scaring her, Twyla started picketing against them on the other side of the street. In conclusion, racial stereotyping and racial segregation both have a part in this story. Racial stereotyping helps you figure out which character is black and which is white. This is important because of the racial segregation going on at the time. The schools and bus systems were separating the races and the blacks were trying to change that. They were wanting equal opportunities for themselves and everyone. In the end you never find out the true story about Maggie and never know whether she was black or white, tripped or fell, and whether she was beaten or not.

People Dont Appreciate The United States – Creative Writing Essay Free Online Research Papers People Dont Appreciate The United States Creative Writing Essay Being a United States citizen is a great privilege to all that live here because of all the rights you have. Someone is not in control of you. You have the freedom of speech and the right to vote when you’re eighteen. And other countries don’t have that to offer. Some people don’t appreciate what the United States is offering to them and they take it for granted and think that it sucks and they think the other countries are better. They have no clue about a lot of things and we’re one of the best countries in the world. And I think that our country is great, I just don’t like where I live in this country, I mean its ok, but there nothing to do, but its fine, I guess. The United States is the best county I think and I hope people have more respect for our country and don’t think that we got it bad. We don’t have it bad, its there reason that it’s bad for them, not the United States, all they had to do is to go get a job. We have it easy compared to the people in Africa and South America, they don’t have a chance to get a job and if they do they would work for almost nothing I just hope they realize what we have and don’t take it for granted, and be proud to be a United States citizen. Job Search Tips that Work Yes, They Worked for Me! Many job search experts, including me, are out there giving tips about how to find jobs. I thought Id give you all some job search tips based on my own experience one that got me several interviews and a part-time job when I moved to a new city. In my search, I was open to accepting a part-time position as something steady and stable while I started my own business. Job Search Tips that Worked 1. Created multiple versions of my resume. One emphasizes my managerial experience; one emphasizes my legal experience; another emphasizes my writing and editing experience. For each job I was interested in, I made sure the keywords from that job description were in my resume! 2. Applied to a lot of jobs. Yes, even ones I thought I didnt want. Some of them turned out to be more interesting than I had expected. I also applied to jobs there was probably no way I would ever get. And I sent cover letters and resumes to places where I would want to work but where there were no available jobs advertised (including the University of Wisconsin Law School). Because you never know. 3. Wrote engaging, punchy cover letters. Each cover letter was custom tailored to the specific job I was applying for. It made a difference. I was offered several interviews in widely divergent fields. 4. Went on an informational interview. Where there was no position currently available but there was a possibility of a future job, I scheduled time to talk to someone relevant. 5. Asked what I needed to bring to interviews. I found out what the employer wanted and brought the requested materials. 6. Showed up 15 minutes early for interviews. I also  chatted politely with the receptionists whenever possible. Believe it or not, this practice can get you far! 7. Stayed positive and friendly in the interviews. I talked about things other than the job. Plus I had researched the company, so came prepared with questions I could ask about the organization and the job. 8. Wrote thank you notes. (At least when I was interested in the job!) If 2 people interviewed me, I wrote 2 thank you notes, each with its own unique message. 9. Clarified my priorities for myself. I got clear that having a part-time job with flexibility, in an open and friendly environment, was what I wanted. These attributes were more important for me than the pay rate or even growth opportunities. The more I got clear about what I wanted, the closer I got to getting it. 10. Stayed active! I searched for or applied for jobs every day, while also taking care of my body by exercising every day. I sent out at least 2 job applications per week, whether I found the perfect opportunity or not. In my spare time, I volunteered to help a woman with disabilities to write a book. I took a transcription job that kept a little bit of money flowing in. And I started my own business, which got me out in the community and on the internet networking. I was never sitting around wondering what to do on any given day. Remember, action breeds action! Doing  something –  anything – keeps you engaged in your life and work. You never know what will come out of the relationships you form. How Effective Are These Job Search Tips? What did I get out of all of this? Several interviews, and ultimately a 25% time job at the University of Wisconsin Law School, Office of Career Services. Its was a perfect fit as I ramped up my own business. All these job search tips worked for me.  What has worked for you?

Analysis of Competition Bikes Inc Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Analysis of Competition Bikes Inc - Term Paper Example Income Statement is one of the fundamental financial statement that provides results of revenues, earnings, and EPS (Earning Per Share). The income statement provides a consolidated view of the revenue a company earned, the expenses it incurred and its effect on the bottom line, i.e. the profit during a certain period of time. It is a mirror to the investors reflecting on company performance and its potential to perform. Essentially a company should be earning more than it is spending and thus signal profit earning opportunity to the investors. The horizontal analysis of the Income Statement of Competition Bikes Inc. would compare the performance of the company during the year 2006-2008. The following is a snapshot of the Income Statement of company during 2006-2008 along with its horizontal analysis. We have compared the Income Statement of 2007 keeping 2006 as the base year and then analyzed the performance of 2008 keeping 2007 as the year of reference. Horizontal Analysis of Incom e Statement 2006-2007 As we have mentioned earlier, there are two major sections of an Income Statement: Revenue, Expenses, and Profit. Revenue minus the expenses is the profit and we would look at the company’s change in revenue and overall expenses during the period of 2006-2008. As it is evident from the horizontal analysis of 2007 with 2006 as the base year, revenues have increased by 37.5% during the year 2006-2007 due to the increase in Net Sales by 33.3%, which shows that the company is strong in its area of operation. The Cost of Goods Sold also increased by 31.8%, which is very close to the percentage change of Sales during the year, thus indicating that it is not a negative sign. It is a concern for the company even if the profits are high when the increase in Cost of Goods Sold is not relative to the increase in Sales. A definite weakness for any company is its increasing expenses, specifically administrative expenses. The Selling expenses also increased during the year by 33% including the expense on advertising that increased by 37% and administrative expenses increased by 20.4%. A major chunk of the administrative expense is the expenditure on Research and Developed which increased by 37.5%. The company believes in bringing a superior product to the market that has quality as well as first movers advantage with it, and it provides the company a strong selling potential. Thus, the overall increase in the expenses was by 24%, which is not a positive sign for any company, specifically increment in administrative expenses exhibit operational inefficiencies as the company cannot justify the expenses with any particular expansion project. However, a more clear idea of selling and administrative expenses as compared to the sales would be evident in the vertical analysis of the company. The operating income of the company, which is the revenue minus expenses increased by 154.6% and the overall profit before income tax and the Net Earnings increase d by more than 300% showing abnormal but phenomenal growth. A horizontal analysis of year 2007 keeping 2006 as the base year reveals positive growth for the company in terms of Sales and the overall Net Earnings that shows that Competition Bikes Inc. is moving in the right direction and growing. The major strengths of the company lies in the increase in S

With this experimentation, he was able to realize that our prefrontal lobes, which are liable for ‘fear’, ‘anxiety’ and ‘emotional memory’, contain a certain motor portion that keeps the ability to overrule the signals of other bodily systems. The prefrontal lobes are quite useful in foreseeing and enabling us to keep away from dangers, but also dangerous for us in case of overstimulation. The prefrontal lobes have effective role in stress management because they are involved in reflective actions that make us ready to anticipate some kind of stress and avoid it beforehand. The primary appraisal in the transactional model of stress can be described as assessment of potential threat in terms of its being stressful or not. The stressful threat is dealt by analyzing the amount of damage, anticipation of future damage and prospect of development. The secondary appraisal in the transactional model of stress is the evaluation of resources that can be employed for dealing with the potential threat. If the accessible resources are less as

3-Day Exercise Activity Analysis Essay Example for Free

3-Day Exercise Activity Analysis Essay In this paper I will discuss my current exercise habits as well as discussing my Physical Activity Tracker results. I will also talk about how I can ultimately improve my exercise habits and how I can incorporate a workout routine into my everyday living and be able to use it throughout the entire year. My current exercise habits as of the present moment are none sadly to say. I am one of those people who do not work out. I come from a long line of people in my family who is very over weight. My mother and aunt as well as my sister suffer from high blood pressure and diabetes. I know that the fact that those things run in my family puts me at an even greater risk for acquiring both of those ailments. I have dieting on numerous occasions as well as work out. I am a single mother of 4 children and I also work full time as well as attend classes here online. It is really hard to stick to any kind of plan that includes diet and exercise, however I know that if I do not take action soon then it will ultimately be too late. I also worry about my middle daughters weight as well because she takes after my side of the family and she also has type 2 diabetes because of her weight so I think that creating a workout routine followed with a diet will have a positive effect on myself as well as my children. Looking at my Physical Activity Tracker my activity level over a 3 day period was very minimal and just included house work. It was described as light intensity activity and that does not count toward MIE minutes. The total number of calories that I had burned within that 3 day period was only 6,789 which when broken down comes out to a total of 2,263 calories burned per day. My weekly goal for physical activity was 150 minutes of aerobic activity per week and 2 days of muscle strength training every week. However I did not meet any of those goals at all. I know that I need to take more indicative when it comes to working out daily if I plan to get in shape and lose any weight at all. I believe that the changes that I need to make in my everyday life to be able to actually follow through with a workout routine and have more energy to be able to do so is to eat more healthier foods first of all, like green leafy vegetables and fruits along with taking my vitamins so that will help with my energy level. I know that I also need to start drinking water as I do not drink any at all right now and I know that that is very unhealthy. I think that just getting up and taking a walk around my neighborhood on a day to day basis will help. I think that I will start just by walking around a couple of blocks at first and then slowly increase that to 4 blocks and so on and so forth. I think that walking would be a great way to start but I also believe that doing some sit ups and leg lifts after I get my energy level built up after I start my walking regimen would really benefit me as well. When I was a teenager I had a daily routine of doing 50 sit ups a day along with 50 leg lifts. I did that for a whole year straight and I lost so much weight not to mention inches off of my waistline. I think that I will also look into joining a gym so that when it is cold outside I can go there and walk on the treadmill as well as use the other equipment, I have a friend that goes everyday faithfully and I think that working out with a partner would help get me more motivated as well. I intend to get in shape this year because I am not getting any younger and I know that my health is essential if I want to be here to be able to see my children grow up.

The Importance of Fear in The River Warren :: River Warren Essays

The Importance of Fear in The River Warren      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   In Kent Meyers' The River Warren, the reader can detect many examples of symbolism. The basic theme throughout the novel focuses on the river. The River Warren, in its past and present state, means different things to each character in the novel. Many important scenes take place on the river and its banks emphasizing its importance. As the river winds through the land around Cloten in the story, its symbol winds through the lives of the characters and the lives of readers. Meyers stresses the river's significance to members of the community through each character's testimony and story. In the novel the river represents- symbolizes- is fear.      Ã‚  Ã‚   Everyone has some type of fear, and for each character in the novel this holds true. To Angel Finn, a dream of the river's past is admittedly exciting. On one specific night, Angel's fears are clearly presented on the river. He says, "I ain't been afraid on that river for a long time, spooked but never afraid...but I was surely afraid when I come around that bend...my heart kinda shriveled"(143). Angel has found his fear on the river. It is odd, though, that Angel usually goes to the river to escape from his fears. He says, "on the night river, everything seems far away, so far away it's come back around to being close, and a man can need nothing and want everything, and wonder what his life's all about at the same time that he knows"(3). Angel wonders about the meaning of life, but in reality, he knows what it's all about. Angel never mentions any family. All we really know about him is that he is a lonely hardware store owner who loves being on the river. W ho is he really? A lonely old man finding escape from life and loneliness fishing on the river. While on the river Angel meets and befriends two young boys, Luke and Jeff. To him, they seem to understand how highly the river should be valued. The three men treat the river as if it has a personality and holds some kind of dignified or sacred value to them. Angel explains himself when he says, "I know I don't know myself on the river, but I swear that it knows me.

Prejudice in to Kill a Mockingbird Essay

In the world people are always preconceived based on who they are or what they look like. Even thought it isn’t as big of a problem in some areas as in others, we need to fight it. If we don’t then it will continue to get more serious and at times lead to death. In Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Alexandra tells her niece that she can’t play with a schoolmate simply because of his class. â€Å"? You can scrub Walter Cunningham till he shines, you can put him in shoes and a new suit, but he’ll never be like Jem? Because? he? is? trash. ‘† (224). This prejudiced state of mind is the foundation for the plot events of the novel. By way of experiences, a young girl, Scout Finch, must learn about the part prejudice plays in the everyday life of Maycomb County. Through settlement patterns, justice, and social stratification Harper Lee reveals the ways of prejudice. The first instance of prejudice, settlement patterns, greatly affects how people of Maycomb are prejudged, not just where they lived, but also where they dwelled. The Ewells are considered the lowest class of Maycomb, aside from the blacks, which is shown by the fact that they live at the edge of the town, right next to the black people. â€Å"? He would show me how where and how they lived. They were people, but they lived like animals'† (30). The author describes where people live as a sort of divider among them, the Ewells not only live near the blacks, but also right next to the garbage dump. Not only was the location of one’s residency used to prejudice them, but also where they would dwell. The blacks’ church, as described by Scout, was, â€Å"unceiled and unpainted within? pine benches served as pews? there was no sign of piano, organ, hymn-books, church programs† (120). Through her description of the church, Harper Lee allows you to know, without having to read any other section of the book, that the black people of Maycomb are of low class. The people of Maycomb are so prejudiced that they live in separate areas of the town from people who differ in social class. Furthermore, there are two types of justice in Maycomb. There is formal justice, what the court or law decides, and informal justice, the decisions, or â€Å"verdicts†, the people of Maycomb make about other people. Both are often tacitly bound by a mindset of prejudice. When Jem is upset about the conviction of Tom Robinson, he asks his father how the jury could possibly do it, when he was obviously innocent. â€Å"? I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done it before and they did it tonight and they’ll do it again and when they do it? seems that only the children weep'† (213). Atticus means that only children become upset over a black man being convicted simply because of his race. While the older people are so accustomed to it that it is not even unexpected, let alone unsurprising. Likewise, informal justice is very hard for Scout to understand. She questions her father about why the Ewell children are allowed to skip school even though it is illegal. As Atticus explains it, â€Å"? Sometimes it’s better to bend the law a little in special cases† (30). People let the Ewells do what they want simply because they are Ewells. The people assume that none of them could ever become anything anyway, so why bother trying to force them to waste their time in school? The people made this â€Å"law,† and even though it is illegal, nobody fights it because there is an understanding about the Ewells. The people created laws, whether official or unofficial, that were based on prejudices. Last, the largest factor affecting prejudice, is social stratification. The citizens of Maycomb are very quick to make conclusions on a person based on their social class. People are immediately judged based on whom their family is. â€Å"Aunt Alexandra was of the opinion that the longer a family had been squatting on one patch of land, the finer it was† (130). The personality of a person is already decided in the minds of many Maycomb citizens just by looking at what their family did in previous generations. In addition, if you are black, you are instantly considered trash and below everybody else. â€Å"It was all over town this morning that you were in the Colored balcony. Wasn’t it right close up there with all those † (214). This statement demonstrates how the people of Maycomb all assume that if you are black then you are lower than they are. The people of Maycomb County almost always jump to conclusions about people just because of who they are or their family is merely because they are so accustomed to it. Concluding, Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, uses many factors, including where people live, the justice system, and social stratification, as items of which her characters use for their prejudices. Through these elements, the plot demonstrates how easy it is to prejudge somebody. While discussing why people fight so much, Jem wonders, â€Å"? Why can’t they get along with each other? If they’re all alike, why do they go out of their way to despise each other? ‘† (227). People fight because they are so vastly different. The answer to the fighting, which is found in this quote, is to stop judging each other on our differences and to start looking for our similarities. We need to all try a little harder to not prejudice different people if we are to achieve the goal of improvement in our lives.

Classic Airlines and Marketing

Classic Airlines and Marketing Classic Airlines is the fifth largest airline in the world with 25 years of experience and profitable revenue. Even though the industry is in a financial downfall, Classic Airlines is not immune to pressure. Competitive pressure and increased lower-fare travel have combined to cause passenger revenue in a long-term trend. The five environmental forces in businesses must monitor: social, economic, technological, competitive and regulatory. By identifying trends related to each of these forces businesses can develop and maintain successful marketing programs (Kerin, Hartley, Berkowitz Rudelius, 2005). The airline industry has reached a low point since the September 11th attacks that has contributed to the airline economics in addition to the worldwide economic viability. Worldwide including The United States has been impacted by the market decrease and has the airline business striving to regain and improve profitability. In spite of financial issues the airline industry remains compet itive and as shown in Exhibit A, Classic Airlines Financials negative numbers are starting to show more each month (Course Materials, 2009).English: Screenshot from WebCRMSituation BackgroundBy an increased uncertainly about flying there has been a concerned investment community on the watch, the airline industry operates with a microscope watching over them. The consumers' confidence appears to be waving. Classic's declining rewards program measured a decrease in reference to the lower number of Classic reward member which, turns to the lower amount of flights. The loyal customer's that Classic Airlines has had are not been happy and they are going somewhere else. Rising costs, such as labor and fuel has limited Classic's ability to compete for a valued perk for the frequent flier.Classic is now facing a mandated cost reduction to take place over the next year and the Board of Directors has not released much information on the company's current state and this may be...

Book Emperor Of The Air English Literature Essay

Book Emperor Of The Air English Literature Essay Throughout many of his stories in his book â€Å"Emperor of the Air† author Ethan Canin explores the theme of happiness in relation to his characters. Depending on which source one uses, happiness ranges from the â€Å"quality or state of being happy† to â€Å"a state of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy† and according to the Oxford English Dictionary â€Å"Good fortune or luck in life or in a particular affair; success, prosperity†. Based on this, happiness is subjective to the individual. Every story in the book deals with the theme in its various forms but the three pieces I will examine each deal with this subject and its various definitions in their own ways, and I feel are the best representations of â€Å"happiness†. In his second story â€Å"The Year of Getting to Know Us† Canin introduces the idea of happiness directly and very matter-of-factly. Canin first questions the happiness of Lenny while he is at the counselors when he is asked â€Å"You sound as if you don’t want to let people near youà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¦Right?† and Lenny responds with â€Å"I’m a reasonably happy man† (Canin 26). After reading this, we get a sense that maybe Lenny is lying, that he is holding something back. How can someone be happy, going through what he has, and will continue to go through? The events that are explained further in the story: his fathers death and his wife’s affair, impose on this question further. On the very next page Lenny goes on to talk about his life saying â€Å"I am struck by the good fortune of my life† (Canin, 1988). Perhaps Lenny truly is happy, as he early states an exact definition of the word in his thought of â€Å"good fortune†. Despite all that has happened in his life, he remains optimistic, and believes himself to be happy, and maybe he is. The opposition to Lenny’s apparent happiness is the nearly consta nt â€Å"nagging† he receives questioning his emotions and ability to feel anything at all. Canin mentions such an instance immediately after mentioning Lenny’s good fortune in life when he states â€Å"Anne says that I don’t feel things† (Canin 27). Lenny never questions whether or not if he is able to â€Å"feel†, but also never goes out of his way to show any emotion other than stating that he is indeed happy. Even after witnessing his wife’s affair firsthand, the only way Lenny can express himself is by writing down on a napkin â€Å"you are a 40 year old man with no children and your wife is having an affair† (Canin, 1988). Lenny’s apparent lack of any emotion that would come naturally to anyone in the same circumstance is quite intriguing and leaves the reader questioning his feelings, if he has any. Another moment where Lenny’s feelings are under fire comes when he is a child and his mother asks him if he is angry and he responds with â€Å"I don’t know† (Canin, 1988). This shows the reader that even though he was young, Lenny was indecisive about his feelings, and whether or not he felt anything. Canin leaves the decision of whether or not this character is happy or if he can feel, up to the reader.

Structure and meaning in literary discourse Essay - 1

Structure and meaning in literary discourse - Essay Example As Robert E. Longacre declares, "a discourse revolution of some sort is shaping up in response to the demand for context and for greater explanatory power." (Longacre, 1) It is also relatable here that the current use of the term 'discourse' incorporates two areas of linguistic concern such as the analysis of dialogue and the analysis of monologue. Significantly, a workable discourse incorporates prominence and cohesion or coherence. In cohesion as well as coherence two basic components are included and they are surface structure cohesive devices and semantic and lexical coherence. The pre-eminence of a plot as a coherence device in a narrative has been generally recognised. Plot may be comprehended as notional structure of narrative discourse and there is correspondence between notional structural features and the surface structure. Embedded discourse has been a significant tool used in the plot and peak pf a literary piece in order to encode the inciting moments and developing conf licts in the notional structure as surface structure episodes. Charles Dickens' celebrated novel A Tale of two Cities has significantly several examples of embedded discourses and the novel marks the climax as well as the denigration as peak in its surface structure. ... both the climax and the denouncement as peak and peak' in its surface structure." (Longacre, 38-39) Therefore, there are several examples of embedded discourses in A Tale of two Cities and they relate to each other and integrate into the entire novel. The marking of surface structure peak has great implication in the literary discourse and it is important to recognise peak when embedded discourse is existent. There are several methods of embedded discourse like rhetoric underlining, concentration of participants, heightened vividness, change of pace etc. In rhetorical underlining, the narrator uses extra words when he wishes to keep the important pint of the story. Parallelism, paraphrase, and tautologies are some of the tools employed. The crowded stage has been recognised as the feature of peak. The notional structure climax or peak can be evidently found out in the novel A Tale of two Cities in the second trial of Charles Darnay. Heightened vividness is a major method which results from a nominal-verbal balance by way of tense shift. In the novel A Tale of two Cities one clearly finds a tense shift in one of the most important moments of the story. Thus, there is a tense shift to present tense in the novel following the trial a nd arrest of Sidney Carton instead of Charles Darney. The shift of the tense has importance in the story's development. The tense shift "adds vividness and excitement andmarks a peak' which encodes part of the notional structure denouncement of the story." (Longacre 40-1) Therefore, one may distinguish peak or climax from peak' or denouncement in the surface structure of the novel A Tale of two Cities. Change of pace is another method used by the literary discourse and its main devices are difference in the constructions and difference in
